How to buy the Best Laptop for Programming?

Are you looking for a laptop so you can work your magic on various apps and software from anywhere and anytime? Buying a laptop for programming or coding isn’t like buying any regular laptop. There are plenty of factors that you need to see in order to find the best one and in this buyer’s we will tell you exactly what goes into that search.

The Operating System

Well, I think most you would be already aware that there mainly 2 options that you can opt for, Windows and Apple Mac and the winner out of the two is hands down, Windows. Why? That is because of its compatibility with various coding software.  Not to forget, Windows laptops are also the more affordable option.

Linux is a great option for those interested in Python and PHP coders while Apple should only be considered if you are focusing solely on the Apple Platform.

The Processor

Irrespective of whether you are developing games, apps or software when it comes to coding, a powerful processor in indispensable. If you have the funds, it hardly gets any better than an i7 hexacore processor. Processors like that can turn your laptop into a workhorse. But on a general level, an i5 Processor should suffice.

If you are on a budget or if you are just beginning with your coding career and are looking for the perfect partner for college days, an i3 processor should be good enough. Anything less than that, simply won’t cut it

RAM

The more the RAM the better will be your experience. That being said, RAM’s also add to the cost. Keeping that in mind, for programming, an 8GB RAM is a must. And if you are into gaming, then 12 to 16GB of RAM should give ample freedom to switch between programs in a jiffy.

A 4GB RAM is only ideal if you are a beginner and need a laptop for your first couple of years in college.

SSD and HDD

Well, in an ideal world, I would love to have a combination of both. But a laptop with both an HDD and an SSD will cost you significantly higher. Considering you have the funds, it is a no brainer.

This is mainly because of the speed that an SSD offers. With an SSD your laptop is likely to load and boot faster and with an HDD, you will have ample storing room for all your software and even games.

Most high-end to mid-range laptops have a 128GB or 25GB SSD teamed with a 1TB HDD. But if you are looking for a laptop on a budget, you can also opt for an SSD free laptop but again 1TB HDD is a must so you never run out of space.

GPU Unit

Most people think a GPU unit is limited to gaming. Yup, it has a lot to do with gaming but is not restricted to it. Whether you are a programmer or video editor, having a GPU unit with a dedicated RAM is sure to give you a handy boost especially if you into game development. But the question is, how kind of GPU do you really need?

For game developers an NVIDIA graphics card with at least 4GB to 8GB dedicated VRAM is ideal. If not that, a 2GB RAM should serve you well (after all, who does not enjoy the occasional mid-day break playing Fortnite, PUBG or FIFA, right?).

Display

If you love a big display, a 17-inch display would be perfect but the standard display with most laptops is 15.6-inches which in my opinion is reasonable. The most important thing with displays is that it should be Full-HD.

Apart from that, it should also have sharp colors and should be bright enough so you never miss out on any details.

An anti-glare glass would be the icing on the cake as it will keep the eyes from straining on days you decide to pull an all-nighter.

Other Features

A large yet comfortable keyboard with a good backlight is a must you can work uninterrupted even in the dark.

A lightweight laptop can be a blessing in disguise especially if you travel a lot. Plus, you can always get a laptop back to keep it safe and secure.

Conclusion

Here is everything you needed to know if you need a laptop for coding. Understand your needs, fix a budget based on that and I am sure you won’t go wrong.
